It was great to see so many families connecting and reconnecting with other families and Elboya staff at the Welcome Back BBQ last week. Un gros merci to School Council for generously sponsoring this event. On Thursday, Sept. 28 we will have our first School Council meeting of the year. This is open to all families and it’s a great way to stay connected to school happenings, contribute input and get involved in your child’s educational experience. Hope to see you in the Learning Commons at 6:30 pm.
Terry Fox
Elboya students participated in the school's Terry Fox Run Day, Sept. 15. Students were very engaged during the Kindergarten to grade 5 and the grade 6 to 9 assemblies where they heard personal stories from Elboya parents. These stories highlighted the importance of advancing cancer research and the benefits of raising money and awareness! A big thank you to Megan Emmett and Vanessa D'Souza for sharing their stories of bravery and perseverance with the student population. We would also like to thank all the families that donated to our school's fundraising campaign. We surpassed our goal of $1325 and raised a total of $2135! Way to go Falcons!
Truth & Reconciliation Week
This week is Elboya's Truth and Reconciliation Week. All grade 6-9 humanities teachers will be dedicating time to learn about Influencial Indigenous peoples, the impact of residential schools, and the steps towards reconciliation. Students will have opportunities to visit our Indigenous garden, and also participate in sessions created by the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. At lunch there will be "Every Child Matters" sticker sales, orange candy sales and t-shirt tie dyeing in the fishbowl. All students are encouraged to participate. These events not only allow Elboya to support Indigenous owned small businesses, but also will raise money for the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund which aims to build cultural understanding and create a path toward reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Please consult your child's Google Classroom for more information. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Mme Valji (savalji@cbe.ab.ca) We will be recognizing Orange Shirt Day on Thursday, September 28th. Thank you for your support!
Band News
Grade 8 and 9 Band Camp Forms are due today (Monday) and are available at the office to fill out. Please email Mrs. Bates today if you cannot submit the paper copy today. For Grade 6-9 band students this semester, band instrument rental forms will go home this week and are due on Thursday.
Band Clinics - The ESBPA is funding some very important Grade 7-9 band instrument clinics after school on Friday, Oct. 6. Please plan for your child to attend this one-time only event this year, from 1:30-3:30. They can go to the band room right after school that day.
Band Bottle Drive- Many band students will take home flyers and maps this week to spread the word about our ESBPA Band Bottle Drive on Saturday, Oct. 14 from 10am-12pm. The flyers should be delivered before the long weekend! All families can start saving their refundable recyclable drink containers and stop by to donate on the 14th. Thank you Elboya community! Hope your family gets involved in your own way towards Reconcilaction by participating in one of the city run events (like Fort Calgary), enjoys the abundance of the gifts provided by Na’a (Mother Earth), etc. Whatever you choose, it is our hope that together we are taking steps towards Truth & Reconciliation.
