Attendance will be taken each morning and afternoon, and in cases where the parent/guardian has not informed the school, every effort will be made to contact the parent/guardian to verify the absence.
Students should talk to their teachers on the day of return to school.
Regular attendance is essential for student learning and is governed by the School Act of the Province of Alberta. Students are required to attend every day the school is in operation, unless prohibited from doing so because of illness, a family emergency, or the observance of a religious holiday. If a student must be absent from school, we ask that their parent telephone the school at 403-777-7760 and press 1 for the absence line to report the absence.
The school office will determine if the absence is excused. ALL unreported absences are recorded as unexcused. There are no optional attendance days on our calendar, including during Provincial Achievement Tests.
Attendance Line: 403-777-7760 ext. 1
In the event of student absence, the parent/guardian is asked to call the school and leave a message no later than 8:30 AM on the day of absence. This messaging system is available 24/7.
Please leave the following information:
- name of student(s)
 - grade(s)
 - teacher(s)
 - reason for absence or lateness
 - length of absence if known

Homeroom
Homeroom is a key part of Elboya School. Students are expected to be seated inside their homeroom when the bell rings.
Checking In/Out during the School Day & Leaving Early
If students must leave the school due to illness, appointment, or other reason, they are to check out at the main office and provide a note from their parent. Similarly, if students arrive after the late bell, they must first check in at the main office and receive a late slip to present to the receiving teacher.
Calling the office to pick up your child 10 minutes before the dismissal bell is difficult as this is a very busy time of day. When picking up your child over the lunch hour, please inform the office in advance so that student is kept inside rather than having them go outside on the playground. Informing the office in advance whenever possible allows for a more efficient pick up.
Punctuality - Late arrival
Students are expected to be in the building by the warning bell, to go to their lockers/cloak rooms, and to be seated at their desks at the start of every class. Chronic absences and lates will be address in collaboration with parents.
Extended Leaves (Vacations)
Longer absences should be discussed with administration. If a student will be absent for three or more school days, an ‘Extended Leave of Absence’ Form must be completed. This form is available in the office. Teachers are not required to provide work during a vacation absence. It is the responsibility of students and parents to ensure any missed schoolwork is completed and to be prepared for any tests upon return.
Inclement Weather
Please visit our Cold Weather Days page for information on weather-related school operation and policies.
Attendance Expectations at the CBE
Regular and punctual attendance is foundational to student learning, academic achievement and long-term success. The CBE Administrative Regulation 6020 - Attendance of Students applies to all students, and outlines the responsibilities for students, parents and school staff.
