Greetings Elboya Families,

It is with great pleasure that we open our doors to welcome students on Thursday, August 29, for the 2024-25 School Year.  Staff have been busily preparing to receive students and are looking forward to establishing strong partnerships with families.  A big shout out to our Administrative Assistant Team, Teaching Staff and Facility Operating Staff who have all been instrumental in each of their roles to prepare for the start of another School Year.  Merci beaucoup!

Before Thursday morning, families should have received a message from their child(ren)’s teacher(s) with important information, including where to meet them on the first day of school.  Elementary students will be greeted by teachers outside holding signs with their names on them while Junior High teachers will greet students in the building at their Homeroom class.

Kindergarten will have staggered entry for the first 2 days of school. Please meet your teacher by the large rocks (next to the staff parking lot).

  • Thursday, August 29 - students whose last name begins with A-G
  • Friday, August 30 -  students whose last name begins with H-Z
  • For these first two days only the kindergarten hours are 9 am-11:58 am.

For Students in Middle School (Gr. 6-9)

Students should access to their PowerSchool account to find their schedules.  To view this information, parents need to sign up for a MyCBE Account.  Any new students or students that couldn’t access their PowerSchool accounts should proceed to the Information table located in the courtyard.   There will be staff there to help your child find their teacher.  If there is a conflict with your student’s schedule, please email Mr. Cooper (DGCooper@cbe.ab.ca).

Colour Run

As part of our first day celebration for students in Gr. 6-9 we will be running our first annual Colour Run in the afternoon! Please ensure your child wears athletic clothing and footwear and bring along a white top to run through the colours.  Students will run through the community  and at several spots along the route will run through clouds of colour!  This colour is made up of chalk.  Students are encouraged to wear clothing that can get dirty.

*Note:. Elementary students (K-Gr. 5) will be participating in the Colour Run in combination with our Terry Fox Run on Friday, Sept. 13

Transportation

For the students who are bussed, routes will not be posted online; individual stop information will be available to families who have pre-registered for transportation for the 2024-25 school year through MyCBE / PowerSchool. Elboya will have 5 busses this year.  Please ensure that you tell your child which bus route letter they should be riding to/from school as well as which stop to get off at.  If your child is riding the bus, please email Miss Sarah (sokryczka@cbe.ab.ca) with the information above so we can support students until their routine is established.

Below are some safety reminders and information to our community:

  • Parking is not permitted in the Staff Parking Lot.  Please use the “Hug & Go” on 47 Ave or park by the playground along 6 St.  Do not park in front of the school as it is a Bus Zone.
  • We have a “soft” entry, meaning the morning bell will ring at 9:00 am for students in grades 6-9 to proceed to their locker. Another bell will ring at 9:05 am for Kindergarten to Grade 5 students. Once the students hear the bell, they should enter the building and proceed directly to their classroom.  Please respect that entry into the school does not begin before 9:00 am.
  • Once the morning bell rings, teachers will be coming into the building with their classes.  To develop student independence and avoid congestion at the entrances, we encourage parents to say goodbye to their child(ren) outside and remind them of pick up location after school.  Thank you for your support!

Cafeteria

At the end of June Ms. Hendry retired and as of now the position hasn’t been filled.  Since the pandemic, it has been costly to run the cafeteria, causing a loss of profit.  Given this financial constraint, we are re-evaluating and considering possibilities of how to run the cafeteria to make it more cost effective.  We’d love to hear parent suggestions. (Link) In the meantime, the cafeteria space will continue to remain open for students to eat their lunches.  Grade 7-9 students are able to purchase food off-campus from our local establishments, keeping in mind to be respectful Elboya citizens.

Personal Mobile Devices (PMDs)/Cell Phones – AWAY FOR THE DAY POLICY

Last June, the province announced new restrictions on the use of personal devices.  One important change to our school policy is that no technology will be allowed during break times, such as nutrition break & lunch.  More information will be sent out tomorrow with specifics.  In the meantime, please relay this adjustment to your student(s).

Elboya 2024-25 Digital Student Handbook

Parents are key partners in their child’s education.   Teachers will be reviewing this information with students the first couple of days back to school.  It is encouraged that parents review these guidelines with their child(ren).
